Utility template
UPI link for an agreed invoice
Meta category: Utility
Utility templates confirm or update something the person already asked for: an order, a booking, an appointment, or a payment they owe on an existing invoice. A discount, a new product, or a 'while you are here' line moves the template into marketing.
The link collects an invoice the customer already accepted. It is utility when the amount matches that invoice and there is no extra item.

When to use it
Generate the link for that invoice total and put the expiry in {{4}}. Customers should be able to see the same rupee figure on the UPI sheet. If your gateway adds a fee, the template amount and the sheet amount will not match, and you should not send this.
Do not reuse one static UPI id for every customer inside the template text. The button URL should be unique per invoice so a forwarded message cannot pay the wrong bill.
Tips for getting it approved
- The sample URL must be a payment link, and the amount in the body must be the invoice amount.
- Do not say 'limited offer' around a bill they already owe.
- Expiry has to be true. A link that works for a month should not say it dies tonight.
Frequently asked questions
Is a payment link always utility?
No. A link for an existing invoice is utility. A link to 'complete your purchase' on an abandoned cart is marketing. The category follows the job, not the fact that money moves.
Can I include a QR image in the template?
WhatsApp template headers can carry an image, but the button URL is what you should rely on. A QR baked into an image cannot change per invoice.
